Prairie Dogs Becoming Pets
There are many different types of pets that are out there to choose from, but some are just beginning to be popular as pets for people. Prairie dogs are becoming a popular pet for people to have in their homes.
Prairie dogs are part of the squirrel family, and there are currently 5 different species of prairie dogs in the US. Black-tailed prairie dogs are currently the popular breed for bringing into your home as pets. This species is also found in the central region of Texas and around the southern area of New Mexico. If these pets are properly socialized with people, they can be very affectionate creatures with a special bond to their owners. To make this special bond with your prairie dog, you need to hold and be affectionate a lot with your prairie dog while it is a baby. The prairie dog will begin to recognize you as its owner, and will become affectionate with you as well. You must remember that these pets are also exotic and wild, so there is a specific diet that they will require on a daily basis.
The one thing that you should remember is that you should not over-feed your prairie dog. These are small pets, so feeding them more than once a day with a snack is too much. You should also remember that prairie dogs are complete vegetarians. This means that their primary source of nutrition should be different types of grass. As a treat, you can choose to give them some type of leaves or vegetation. You should also consider adding rabbit pellets to your prairie dogs diet. These pellets will help to add nutrients to your prairie dog that they normally wouldn’t get in the types of grass that you are feeding your pet.
The next factor that you should consider is the type of cage that you will have the prairie dog in. Although these are small pets, they require a lot of space in order to stay happy and healthy. They are also quite energetic, so having a wheel for them will help. You should also take time daily to play with and hold your prairie dog. When they are raised with you, they will want that emotional bonding time. If they don’t spend enough time with you bonding, they could become depressed and even sick.
